Animation - Human Lip Sync

After 9 days of very little sleep... here is my Human Lip Sync Assignment. The line is taken from the 1996 "the Birdcage", a movie starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane.

So voila! Here it is! Pencil on paper. Lip sync isn't easy. To be honest I only like one bit of this animation - but I talked to two wonderful teachers of mine - Sam and Blair - and I know how it could have been improved, so hopefully my next assignment will be better!

And as always, some favorite stills!

Life Drawing - Superimposing Costumes!

Today was a fun day in Life Drawing - we had a nude model posing, but we got to superimpose a costume of our own choice (using some photo references we brought). The study was in folds and drapery!

Sorry pictures are so blurry, took them in a rush before leaving class! These are the 2 I handed in! :)

Conte on newsprint.

Theater for Animation - Lulu Davies

For Theater class at Sheridan we were assigned the creation of a character. We had to describe the character and their history and then create an image to represent them.

So here is Lulu Davies:

And this is her story:

The year is 1937 and Lulu Davies is 47 years old. She is a fading starlet of the silent pictures. When she was young she was a stunner - and was wanted by every millionaire in Hollywood and fiercely envied by every girl. Those days however, have turned to dust.

HISTORY
Lulu Davies, born Sally Moore,  is the daughter of a Mormon pastor from Utah. Being born with raven black hair and piercing pale blue eyes, her stunning beauty attracted the attention of many local young men, to the great displeasure of her father. Raised in a house with extremely austere moral values, going to the pictures was strictly forbidden. Lulu managed, with the help of one of her many admirers, to sneak out one night and go to the movies. Enthralled with the glamour of the heroine on screen, Lulu decided at once that she would become a movie star. Wishing to escape the tyranny of her father, and the poverty of her rural life, she ran away from home at age 16 and hitchhiked to Los Angeles. Changing her name to Lulu Davies, she fought (or rather slept) her way the top of the biggest Hollywood productions. She became an icon, and was adored, envied and filthy rich. Her success was hard won, and she would not under torture reveal the truth of her upbringing and childhood.

CHARACTER
Though not by nature bad or insensitive, Lulu's life has turned her into a rather cold and self-centered diva. Trying hard to erase all traces of the young Sally Moore, she was forced all her life to play a part. She would never open up to anybody for fear of detection, and her Hollywood life was spun around lies. Her every day persona is a role she plays. She wishes to portray a clever, urban, woman of the world, used to endless luxury and a life of ease and pleasure. She has played this role for so long, that Lulu herself no longer knows if any part of her personality is quite her own.
As films started turning into the "talkies" Lulu began to see herself passed over in favor of young and fresh upstart actresses - of which there was an abundance. This was a great blow to her ego and self confidence. Having always lived in fear of her past, this new fear of aging took its toll on her personality.

Lulu is extremely ego centric and vain. She flies into rages at the smallest provocation. She speaks loudly in a theatrical and dramatic fashion. She treats people of lower class with distain and venom - her fear of ever being associated with them being the driving force in her hatred. Lulu is conversely extremely determined and focused. Her lack of education was balanced out by a instinctual understanding as to the weakness of others - a clear path to getting the upper hand.

She believes that happiness lies in riches, awards and continued success. She will not admit to herself that the two things that are lacking in her life - acceptance and real love - are what she secretly longs for. Constantly dissatisfied, Lulu continues to lie to herself and the world around her clinging desperately to her dying career.

Storyboard - Catnipping Green

Here is a Storyboard I did for school. We were assigned a wacky song about Cat Heaven called "Catnipping Green" and as a team of 12 students we had to create a storyboard.

Each person got a verse. I was lucky last on my team, so I got to board the ending! The setting is Chicago in the 1930s. Our story was about a cat Jim Jones who gets crazy high on catnip, then wins big gambling, then gets smashed on milk and cream, then spends all his money on lady cat strippers... all the while taking "catnip". So here is the end of his adventures... we were not kind to him.

And here are my early storybeats, and character designs. In the end we chose one member of our team to design all the characters. But at the beginning of the project we all made suggestions. My cats were a lot fatter than what was chosen! :)

Painting - Blast from the past!

Since we'll be focusing on drawing horse-drawn stagecoaches in layout this semester, I thought I would dig up some of my old horse paintings from my childhood. One thing I did do a lot of was horse drawings! As I got older though, I started to rebel - to no longer be known only for drawing horses, so I started to branch out into portraiture and then illustration.

But some things you just don't forget. And I think now I've come to terms with my horsy past!

When I was around 12, I really wanted to horseback ride, but our family didn't have the funds for such an expensive hobby. So I started painting horses to sell, so that I could make money for lessons. Then, when I was 14, my family moved back to Poland, Bialystok, for a year... where I didn't go to school! Instead, I painted. Horses. And did a lot of horseback riding, because there it was dirt cheap.

So a blast from the past! My childhood oil paintings! :) Horsies! All oil on canvas!

This one is of Emanor, a very successful arabian stallion at the time - painted in 2001

Studies in Creativity - Our Creative Genius

Next "log" for my Creativity course was in response to Elizabeth Gilbert's Ted talk: Your Elusive Creative Genius. Which you can see at this link.

Elizabeth Gilbert Ted Talk

She talks of the psychological release you get when perceiving your creative genius as outside of yourself. So here is a ULTRA quick animation done in flash of my creative genius, Dobby the House Elf, who's on handy to help me do a good job... and also handy to blame if my animation turns out shit.

A little still from my anim!

Caricatures - Pawel

Almost two years ago, Pawel, along with my family, helped me move cities from Montreal to Toronto. He drove the van for over 6 hours, he lugged furniture, only to take short smoking breaks, and was all in all amazingly supportive.... All he asked in return was his caricature. With a special request "not to be nice" about it...

And almost two years later... here it finaly is! :) Mariusz, his Dad, got a laugh out of it! I hope he doesn't kill me!
